Albert Ellis & REBT
As the founder of Rational-Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT), psychologist Albert Ellis is considered the pioneer and founder of the first cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy (Cognitive Behavioral Therapies, CBTs), followed by the founder of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, psychiatrist Aaron T. Beck (Ellis, 1957, 1961, 1994). As a psychotherapist, Ellis is considered the second most influential psychologist in history (after psychologist Carl Rogers, founder of person-centered psychotherapy) (Smith, 1982), while before his death in 2007, Psychology Today described him as “the best psychologist in life” (Murphy, 2007).
More specifically, the Albert Ellis Institute in New York, USA, was founded in 1959 and has since become a world-renowned psychotherapy training center, which focuses on promoting emotional and behavioral health through research and the implementation of short-term, effective treatments that bring long-term gains. It is also recognized as an Approved Continuing Education Provider by the American Psychological Association, the National Board of Certified Counselors of the United States, and the New York State Board of the Ministry of Education for Psychology, Social Work, and Mental Health Counselors.
“The Albert Ellis Institute, as well as its until recently affiliated training centers around the world, have trained over 13,000 professional psychotherapists at the basic level of education in REBT”.
The Albert Ellis Institute, as well as its until recently affiliated training centers around the world, have trained over 13,000 professional psychotherapists at the basic level of education in REBT. In this way, REBT is one of the most popular forms of psychotherapy in the world (for more information see the Albert Ellis Institute website at www.albertellisinstitute.org).
In Greece, the Hellenic Institute for Rational-Emotive Behavioral Therapy was founded in 2003 by the psychologist Dr. Chrysoula Kostogiannis, who was trained and supervised by Dr. Albert Ellis and his fellow psychologists Dr. Raymond DiGiuseppe and Dr. Janet Wolfe.
About RECBT
What is RECBT
BASIC INFORMATION
Rational-Emotive & Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (RECBT), widely known as Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), was founded in 1955 in New York, U.S.A. by psychologist and psychotherapist Dr. Albert Ellis, who is considered the grandfather of the Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT) movement (http://albertellis.org/about-albert-ellis-phd/). The name Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) stems from the premise that there is an interaction between adversities and the individual’s basic mental attitudes or beliefs, about those adversities, that ultimately causes emotional distress, self-defeating, behavioral dysfunctions, intense physiological reactions and other negative thoughts.
RECBT is the first Cognitive-Behavior Approach, an effective, evidence-based therapy (http://albertellis.org/RECBT-in-the-context-of-modern-psychological-research/), dealing with a wide variety of emotional and behavior difficulties, including:
- Addictions
- Anger and Related Disorders
- Anxiety Disorders
- Bipolar and Related Disorders
- Challenges Related to Daily Living
- Depressive Disorders
- Disruptive, Impulse-Control and Conduct Disorders
- Eating Disorders
- Neurodevelopmental Disorders
- Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders
- Personality Disorders
- Trauma- and Stressor-Related Disorders do we have this in the Greek version?
